Overview
In January 2008, the University of Maine became one of 37
higher education institutions nationwide to become, as Apple describes
it, "a campus that never sleeps."
UMaine is now on iTunes U, a free, Web-based content distribution system
hosted by Apple that enables colleges and universities to make audio and
video material from lectures, interviews, audio books and other sources
more available with the ease of the iTunes Store.
Users can download the free content to their Mac or PC, transfer the
information to their iPod or other MP3 player, and listen to or view
university-related information anywhere and at any time. For UMaine, the
initial content will include UMaine Today magazine features, news items,
and institutional and presidential videos, as well as a handful of New
Media course files. Soon, the site will grow to include a wide variety
of additional courses provided by UMaine professors and lecturers.
iTunes U will allow the University of Maine to reach a much larger
audience of prospective students — as well as current students and
alumni — via Apple's popular iTunes interface.
